The Nature Society (Singapore) or NSS is a non-government, non-profit organisation dedicated to the appreciation, conservation, study and enjoyment of the natural heritage in Singapore, Malaysia and the surrounding region. The Marine Conservation Group (MCG) is a special interest group of NSS whose aim is to encourage understanding and protection of marine biodiversity and marine areas in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
Pulau Ubin is globally classified as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). In line with the Restore Ubin Mangroves (RUM) initiative, join us as we carry out mangroves and coastal clean-ups to remove abandoned drift nets and marine debris that choke up the Ubin coastline. This can also ensure that our wildlife continue to have the proper environment to thrive.

RUM (Restore Ubin Mangroves) is a community project to restore mangroves in abandoned aquaculture ponds at Pulau Ubin.

NSS members together with project RUM volunteers, all with a common interest and love for our precious coastal wetlands would come together, carrying out mangroves and coastal cleanups frequently. Surveys are also done by volunteers to better understand the RUM sites marked for restoration using the EMR method.
Ecological Mangrove Restoration (EMR) works with mangrove elevation and hydrology to naturally improve restoration success. Instead of manually planting mangrove species, EMR focuses on ensuring the site conditions are suitable for natural regeneration. It allows us to produce a self-sustaining wetland ecosystem.
